Note for Sub: The following activities are for Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2021. Modify them as needed to fit the needs of the classroom. If the videos fail to load, or you find yourself with extra time at the end of class, feel free to utilize the DVD player that is already connected to the laptop. Once you insert the DVD, you will need to access the VLC player to watch the DVD. It should automatically pop up. Your schedule will be as follows: 7:15-7:45 breakfast duty 7:45-8:30 Planning 3rd 8:30-9:15 4th 9:20-10:05 5th 10:10- 10:55 2nd 11-11:45 lunch/planning 1st 12:30-1:15 Kinder 1:20-2:05 Activities for all grades: *You can scaffold, adjust or skip an activity based on student needs. 1. Instrument 4 Corners. (10-15 mins) Click on the link to open. Students move to the appropriate corners to answer the question: to which instrument family does the instrument belong? There are color Xs in each corner to match the corners on the slides. Younger grades can do 1 level, older grades can do more if desired. Before playing, have students brainstorm ways the different instrument families are different. For example, the string family has instruments with strings; the percussion family includes instruments that you hit, shake or scrape; woodwinds require your breath and have mouthpieces that go between the lips or under the lips; brass instruments feature mouthpieces that are round and are places against the lips, etc. pro.ispringcloud.com/acc/5neY-080ODA2Ng/s/48066-d04mJ-AXJik-y5rtg 2. Freeze Dance! (5 mins) Younger grades (K-2) might enjoy playing freeze dance. There are some CDs on the stereo that are kid appropriate versions of songs from the 70s and 90s. 3. Compare and Contrast! (7-10 mins) Watch the following 2 videos and compare/contrast the music. The sound in the first video is very soft, so you might want to adjust the volume. The videos are different renditions of Dance of the Sugarplum Fairy from The Nutcracker. Have students brainstorm ways the the music is different (think: instrumentation, volume, speed, feel, rhythm). 3. Remainder of class:
Use the iPads (located in the iPad cart in the back of the classroom) to have students play music games of their choosing. If you played the instrument game first, direct students to start off with the Instruments of the Orchestra app- it has a penguin on the icon. (Make sure iPads are plugged back in at the end of the day). OR Have students vote on which movie they would like to view: The Sound of Music, The Nutcracker, Bugs Bunny Carnival of the Animals or Stomp.
