I know that you are already familiar with this song: But, did you know that there is a dance that goes with it?!?! Try it out! While you're dancing, think about the tempo. Is the song fast or slow? Is the tempo the same for the whole song? Are there any changes?

Ms. Collins Have you ever played with your glass of water at dinner by rubbing your fingers on the rim to make sounds? You were playing part of a Glass Harp! By varying the levels of liquid inside a glass, you can make the pitch go up and down. Below is a video demonstration of the Glass Harp in action. Ask your parents if they will let you try to make sounds with your own glass. Theremins are electronic musical instruments that have been around since 1928! You play a Theremin without actually touching the instrument, but by moving your hands near the antennae. One antenna controls the pitch (how high and low) while the other controls the volume (loud and quiet). The above picture is of a modern day Theremin. Look below for what the earlier models looked like: Here's a Wikipedia article with more information: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theremin
Here's a link to a Google Doodle that will allow you to try and play a virtual model of a Theremin. Enjoy! Link to the Doodle/Game John Williams, composer of Star Wars soundtracks, used the idea of themes and leitmotifs quite bit in his music. A leitmotif is a musical phrase that represents part of the story: a character, setting, mood, plot idea, etc., that is important to the story. Below you will find videos that showcase the different themes, or leitmotifs, used throughout the Star Wars movies. Enjoy! Here is a peek of behind the scenes recording and conversation between John Williams and the Star Wars creator George Lucas. |
